I hope ...Thank you for your very kind comment, Jay. I hope to keep on through 2018!

Bob - I remember years ago there was a discussion on The Hound's blog about turban wearing black American musicians. Among those mentioned were Lynn Hope (The Maharajah of the Saxophone!), The Turbans, and Little Herbert And The Arabians (whom God preserve.) I'm sure there were others.

I don't think we got into the reasons for it, though. I have a feeling there was a range of reasons - from affecting an exotic onstage appearance, to perhaps circumventing discriminatory practices by adopting a "foreign" (non-American) appearance.

And let's not forget Tex-Mex Sam The Sham and the one and only Korla Pandit! The latter was a fascinating figure. He was a light-skinned African American who passed himself off as a Mexican and then as a native of New Delhi born of Indian and French parents. Well worth investigating. He was "the king of exotica" whom I only came across late in his career when he appeared in the Tim Burton film "Ed Wood."

This turbans thing requires an in depth investigation!
boogiewoodyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06565453839281572426noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-661655599191402760.post-3253169907967728032018-01-02T23:35:13.553+00:002018-01-02T23:35:13.553+00:00Dear ones, Boogiewoody & Joan K !

First time I saw it in person was the drummer Soko Richardson when he played in Australia in the mid 1970s with John Mayall's band.

And all the best for 2018.Bob Machttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03442196008415681791noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-661655599191402760.post-56521208241367114772018-01-01T17:48:27.637+00:002018-01-01T17:48:27.637+00:00And a Guid New Year tae you Marie!
