Joan Spins Again - Volume 1 (re-up)

In response to a request, here is a re-up of "Joan Selects - Volume 1". The remaining three volumes will be re-upped later in the week.

This second series of compilations by Joan consisted of short LP length selections of vintage R&B. There are just 18 tracks here, but, hey, they're all killer, etc. I would like to state here and now that "535" by The Dreamers is one humungous piece of rockin' rhythm 'n' blues. Download and hear for yourselves!

The original post with label shots, etc can be read here:

This is the final LP in the Aladdin "... and His Tenor Sax" series. As with the previous LPs in this series, "Maxwell Davis And His Tenor Sax" underwent various changes, first appearing as a 10" album in 1954, then a 12" album in 1956 and then re-appearing on the Score budget label with a new title, "Blue Tango", in 1957. This is an extended 1980s release on the UK / Danish Official label.

The full story of the various incarnations of this LP, along with an outline of the career of Maxwell Davis can be read on the original post here:

Lester Young And His Tenor Sax Volume1 (re-up)

Today's re-up is another LP from the Aladdin "... and his Tenor Sax" series. Like the Illinois Jacquet and Lynn Hope albums, this LP originally appeared as a 10" LP in 1954, but this time around the 1956 reissue as a 12" LP was spread over 2 volumes. Back in July 2010 I "reconstructed" Volume 1 of "Lester Young and his Tenor Sax" by ripping the tracks from a couple of old second hand / charity shop vinyl compilations, so you still get that authentic click and hiss, although not from a reissue of the original LP!

The original 2010 post is here:

It contains a more detailed look at the various issues of this album, label and cover scans sent in by Joan K and other kindly people, and a full run down on the tracks - when, where and who, plus original release. All of the tracks were originally released as 78 rpm singles on Philo / Aladdin.

Your new download link is here:

Tracklist:

1. D.B. Blues
2. Lester Blows Again
3. These Foolish Things
4. Jumpin' At Mesner's
5. It's Only A Paper Moon
6. After You've Gone
7. Lover Come Back To Me
8. Jammin' With Lester
9. You're Driving Me Crazy
10. New Lester Leaps In
11. She's Funny That Way
12. Lester's Be Bop Boogie
13. S.M. Blues

This is the running order of the original "Volume 1" album, but I'm not sure where the divide between Side 1 and Side 2 should be! Can anyone help?

Illinois Jacquet And His Tenor Sax (re-up)

A 1983 Pathe Marconi reissue of an album originally released by Aladdin as a 10 incher in 1954 and then as a twelve incher in 1956. This was originally posted on Be Bop Wino in October 2009. Illinois Jacquet was an important figure in the development of both jazz and R&B tenor saxophone. His wild performance on the live cut of "Blues" from the first Jazz At The Philharmonic concert is probably the root of the honking and squealing R&B tenor sax.

"Flying Home, Parts 1 and 2" was the first disc issued on the Mesner Brothers' Philo label in 1945. "Uptown Boogie" / "Throw It Out Of Your Mind Baby" was the second issue on the label which was later renamed Aladdin. All other tracks on this LP were recorded in 1947. For more information on Illinois Jacquet and these recordings please read the original post here:

Lynn Hope And His Tenor Sax (re-up)

Re-upped from October 2009. This is a 1983 Pathe Marconi issue of an LP originally put out by Aladdin as a 10" album way back in 1954. Aladdin issued 3 other LPs in a short "... and his Tenor Sax" series in the 1950s - the other artists featured being Illinois Jacquet, Maxwell Davis and Lester Young. 1980s versions of these LPs appeared on Be Bop Wino years ago and more re-ups with new links may be in the pipeline ...

This has been one of my favourite tenor sax LPs for 30 years. The sound quality is excellent and while there is no wild honking on display, there's lots of exotica-tinged sax stylings for the discerning R&B and even striptease jazz fan.

The original post from October 2009 can be read here:

Those Great Blues Girls From The 40's (re-up)

In response to a request for a re-up, here's this 1985 Pathe Marconi collection of tracks originally released on Philo / Aladdin, Capitol and Imperial. Betty Hall Jones is very much the star here. Her combination of piano tinkling, sophisticated wit and dry vocal delivery is reminiscent of Julia Lee and Nellie Lutcher.

Joan Selects Encore Appearance Volume 2

And this was the end of Joan Selects. Forty crackly examples of that vocal group record phenomenon - the talking bridge. Think The Ink Spots and those records that always had a spoken interlude, seemingly always beginning with the words "Honey Child ... " Or is my memory playing me tricks? Or perhaps that was Spike Jones and his City Slickers in one of their send ups.

Anyway as you can hear from Joan's marvelous selection, the tradition continued in vocal group records throughout the 1950s. You can find Joan's write up in the original post from 2010 here:

http://bebopwinorip.blogspot.co.uk/2010/01/joan-selects-encore-appearance-volume-2.html

She knows a lot more about this than I do! Also on display on the original post are some rare label shots.

Joan Selects Volume 19 (re-up)

Volume 19 of the Joan Selects series is a mix of vocal group novelties, ranging from classics such as "Louie, Louie" and "Be Bop Wino" to the downright demented such as Vito & The Salutations' crazed deconstruction of "Unchained Melody." No wonder this collection was originally subtitled "Joan Gets Silly."

Highly recommended - download, stick on your media player, put your feet up and join in with Andre Williams as he pleads "Pass The Biscuits, Please." Life don't get any better than this.

Joan Selects Volumes 17 and 18 (re-ups)

Two more volumes of "Joan Selects" have been re-upped for your delectation. Volume 17 has 30 mainly croonin' and swoonin' vocal group sides. Subtitled "Joanie" after the track by The Bay Bops (who?), this is the one for those of you into dancin' and romancin' to the crackly sound of old doo wop discs.

Volume 18 is a stone classic. 32 slices of the finest New Orleans R&B with a smattering of swamp pop and zydeco. If you didn't get this one first time round, I strongly recommend that you download now!
