Back in the already distant summer of 2018 I posted Desperate Rock'N Roll Volume Ten along with a write up on the whole fershluggener ethos behind This Sort Of Thing. Pulp magazines, ex-jukebox singles, greasy cafes with steamed up windows, and a ton o' obscure rockabilly, surf, R&B and degenerate country sounds. What's not to like?

I recently found another volume in the series in a local second hand shop, so here we go with another set of the same. The internet provides sources of information on the background to these tracks, so below you'll find some details dug out from Rockin' Country Style which has a page on this comp with info and label shots of the rockabilly and country sides; and for the R&B and surf tracks, www.45cat.com; www.discogs.com; YouTube; and the Bruyninckx discography. I couldn't find  anything on Johnny Candles, whom God preserve. EDIT - info on "Johnny Candles" has been added thanks to Apesville's comments. Mixing '50s doo wop, pre-World War II blues, R&B shouters, rockabilly, boogie woogie, jump blues, real country, and rock'n'roll, Volume 25 is a wild ride. This is a bigger than usual download - 284.1 MB, but as connoisseurs of fine wine say - "it demands attention." Perhaps the best "Joan Selects" to date?

From the rock 'n' roll underground, from the forgotten netherworld of spaced out hillbillies, two-chord Elvis wannabees and R&B bawlers 'n' squallers, comes another of those mysterious compilations (see T-Bird Party!) seemingly put together from someone's box of obscure, or at least semi obscure, scratched ole 45's. It's sort of a vinyl equivalent of those columns in "Kicks" magazine where one or more Kicksters would sling a pile of platters on to the turntable and describe what they were hearing in a breathlessly rollicking, stream of consciousness hepcat word whirl, all backed up with a deep knowledge of the most obscure tiny record labels from the utmost back of beyond.

So you take a bunch of obscuros, and wrap 'em up in a sleeve featuring sleazy artwork from the cover of some 1950's crime novel or pulp magazine, and bang! you've got yourself the alternative alternative. A promise of sex, violence and pounding adults only rock and roll which should be irresistible to thrill seekers everywhere. Or perhaps it awakens lost memories of being hustled past the windows of dirty bookshops in Cowcaddens or maybe the lights of that shop round the corner from Partick Cross subway station packed with imported American comics and paperbacks and it's a dark, wet winter's Saturday afternoon in 1961, but I digress needlessly.

Does it work? Do the sounds live up to the hype? And hype it is, folks. Well yes, by and large it works for me. This assemblage of twangin' geetars, crashing drums, thick country accents, rasping saxes, rhythm 'n booze howling, and general lo-fi hi-jinks is fun! And in the end that's what counts. Suspend all critical faculties and succumb to the spirit of desperate rock 'n' roll!

Be Bop Wino regulars will be pleased by the presence of a track from the 1956 concert in Atlanta which made up one side of the "Piano Red In Concert" LP. "I'm Nobody's Fool" wasn't included in that LP, so here's a chance to catch up with another piece of Red's amiable schtick. And it's a fine track which fairly rocks along. Other R&B highlights on this collection include a frantic number on Derby by very obscure blues shouter Walter "Sandman" Howard, a frantic "Hound Dog" cash-in from Frank Motley, and a not quite so frantic early Isley Brothers rocker.

When this LP came out it was the only way you were going to hear a lot of this stuff unless you had a record collection to die for. The lack of info added to the mystique, but the internet has changed all that. Now you can find out all sorts of info on the background to these tracks. Moreover, you can listen to most of these tracks and countless other obscure 1950's / early 1960's sides on YouTube as a treasure trove of the rarest rock and roll has been uploaded there by enthusiasts. For instance while I was searching around for details on the Tony March side "Stompen Rock" I came across not only the version on Checker which is on this LP, but I also found the original very rare version which was self issued on a small label called Savoy (NOT the R&B / jazz label). The world has indeed changed since "Desperate Rock'N Roll" sleazed its way into the record shop browsers.

This is a massive searchable motherlode of info which served as an extremely handy aid for what follows below, especially as you can search by compilation title and go straight to "Desperate Rock'N Roll Volume 10." Summertime posts tend to be pretty thin on the ground on "Be Bop Wino." Last year, for example, saw July and August being entirely missed out. One reason for the summer scarcity is that during the long, hot, sunny days I embark on my annual "Kicks-athon" which is where I load up the media player with a stack of instrumental, rockabilly, surf and rockin' R&B tracks, turn on auto-DJ, and stretch out with a couple of old copies of the only rock 'n' roll magazine worth a damn - "Kicks."

Founded by Miriam Linna and the late and much missed Billy Miller, "Kicks" was a revelation to me when a work colleague passed on a copy of the seventh and last issue. It was a window on a weird alternative universe where early 1960s teen instrumental groups, surf bands, stoned rockabillies, drunken hillbillies, doo wop groups and wild, wild R&B shouters still ruled the airwaves. And the writing was just as wild as the music! I can say that "Kicks" was partly responsible for making me the man I am today, i.e. a hopeless dropout.

So this summer I'm gonna attempt to keep the Kicks spirit alive on Be Bop Wino with rockin' stuff hot off my new turntable. This doesn't mean there'll be a surge of rockabilly and surf on the blog as I just don't have the vinyl for that. Besides, there are other blogs that do that kind of stuff far better than I could hope to do. I'm thinking of Uncle Gil and Twilightzone and there's a myriad of others where you can pick up on the necessary twangin' thang for your very own Kicks-athon. R&B is still the meat and drink of Be Bop Wino, but we may occasionally "stray" from the usual path in the next few weeks.

"Tough Stuff" - old Charly comp of instros originally issued on Sun and Phillips International. "Raunchy" by Bill Justis was a huge international hit, charting twice in the UK in 1958 for example. The rest of the tracks are not so well known (outside of the cognoscenti), but it's all good jumpin' fun. The Sonny Burgess tracks featuring Billy Lee Riley on harmonica are absolute standouts but the unissued sides by Jerry Lee Lewis and Eddie Bush (Carl Mann's guitarist) are basically jams which lack focus and were never intended to be released. "Eddie's Blues" with its distorted guitar workout foreshadows a thousand aimless guitar noodles which started to appear from 1966 onwards. Indeed at times it's hard to believe that the recording dates from 1959.

That said, this is an entertaining collection and a good soundtrack for summer fun, fun, fun. The sleeve notes by Sun expert Martin Hawkins are very informative and are the ideal poolside reading while you sip a long cool one.

Great googa mooga! What is this Thing called Rock and Roll? Chess Records knew, that's for sure. Take some rockin' rhythm 'n' blues, add a helping of rockabilly, and garnish with a hint of Chicago Blues and you got it, baby, you got it! Ring ring goes the bell, so quit mumblin', put on your hi-heel sneakers, jump into your Rocket "88" while me and my babe wang dang doodle all night long.

This is one of the best "rock 'n' roll" compilations I've ever heard. A lean, mean, all killer-no-filler 14 track collection from the vaults of Chess, Checker and Argo (but no Cadet, despite the title). Once more it's a tale of a record that I haven't listened to for decades turning out to be a gem. It's been on repeat play on my laptop through my amp for the last four or five days much to my rockin' delight.

This post marks the introduction of my new turntable, so no more dodgy wobbly rips. Yay for direct drive! Es lebe Direktantrieb! Vive  l'entraînement direct!

Joan Selects - Volume 15 – Joan’s A Rockin’ Little Angel

The second volume of rockabilly / rock ‘n’ roll in Joan’s series of vintage vinyl rips contains a mixture of the obscure and the well known. I am delighted to see Carl Perkins’ “Dixie Fried” included. This paean to booze and a certain razor wielding good old boy was the record that made me realize that rock ‘n’ roll wasn’t just music for love struck teenagers. I like to think that real rock ‘n’ roll is for adults as it often concerns itself with what some people may call the seamier aspects of life. But enough of my musings, let’s go over to Joan for a few pointers as to what’s in store on this excellent selection:

Joan Selects, Volume 15 - Joan returns to basic rock and roll for these 35 selections. Among the noteworthy high points is an early Roy Orbison when he was under contract to Sam Phillip's Sun Records company. Also under contract to Sun at the same time, were Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis - what an unbelievable stable of talent, not to mention a whole raft of second echelon artists of outstanding abilities.

Janis Martin was billed as the female Elvis, and was under contact to RCA Victor at the same time as Elvis, and there are pictures circulating of Janis and Elvis together. One of Janis' singles interestingly, was her remake of Roy Orbison's “Ooby Dooby”. Janis was one of a precious few female rockers from the 1950's. Another is represented here on volume 15 - the legendary Wanda Jackson, with her "I Gotta Know”, an interesting hybrid combining rock-a-billy and country.

Joe Bennett and the Sparkletones struck the charts with a huge teen hit, "Black Slacks". "Boppin' Rock Boogie" was their follow up, and in all respects as much of a rocker too. Several cuts (3 to be exact) are by one of the giants of rock-a-billy, Carl Perkins, including Dixie Fried, by special request to our estimable blog host Boogiewood. In this collector's opinion, "Put Your Cat Clothes On" is one of the great 1950's rock anthems. From 1950 and on New York City's Crest Label, comes a favorite - by Cliff Martin and his Cliff Dwellers - "I Heard the Juke Box Playing", which evokes images of another and more innocent (in some ways) and simpler time, just at the start of the rock and roll era.

An oft proclaimed Elvis imitator, Ral Donner, is represented here with his biggest hit for George Goldner's Gone record label, "You Don't Know What You Got (Until You Lose It)" - Donner had one other top forty hit, "The Girl Of My Best Friend". There was enough by Donner to compile an album for the Gone label.

Joan Selects – Volume 8 - Wild Mix

Rock and Roll the way it was meant to be. In this mammoth mix (sorry, audio CD burners, you ain’t gonna fit THIS ‘un on a disc) Joan takes us on a whirlwind tour of drunken hillbilly piano pounders (and Jerry Lee too), would-be Elvises, Elvis himself, George Jones going under the name of Thumper Jones, hot rodders, instro rockers, and that rarest of rock ‘n’ roll artifacts – a genuinely wonderful Boyd Bennett record. There’s also what is possibly my second favourite Carl Perkins record, “Movie Magg”, which is pure Hicksville heaven. My all time favourite Carl Perkins disc is “Dixie Fried” which is a charming tale of drunken razor wielding shenanigans in an after hours joint. But it ain’t here, so any of you hep cats who don’t already have it can look elsewhere.

What listening to this stack of 45s reminds me of is the much missed “Kicks” magazine, especially the bit where they invited a bunch of discerning contributors to play and review their own stacks o’wax. Of course the records were so obscure that I’d never heard of 90% of them but the writing was so vivid and enthusiastic that somehow it didn’t matter that I had no idea what the records actually sounded like.

Well this comp is a definite Kicks type selection with all that that entails. I’m listening to it again right now and discovering yet more delights. Fr’instance “Nelda Jane” is a sweaty, leering hymn of lust about a “teenage cutie”. Thing is it sounds like it’s being sung by a middle aged guy, which is rather unsettling, but kind of funny too.

So downloaders, I recommend that you dig out an old copy of Kicks (only seven editions were ever issued, the last being in 1992), settle back for a nostalgic read, and give Joan’s vinyl rips a listen. If you don’t have Kicks, then the nearest online equivalent I can think of is the Hound’s blog. Just print out a bunch of his articles and you’ve got yourself a fine substitute.
